rocks and sea in Krabi Thsiland

Krabi, Thailand

No doubt you have a friend (or even a friend of a friend) who’s visited Thailand and waxed lyrical of its incredible beauty and interesting cultural offerings. A popular destination for Aussies due to its close proximity, value for money, beaches, markets and spas, Thailand is known for the warmth and hospitality of its people and there is so much more to the country than just a beach break!

The most popular beach areas include Phuket & Koh Samui in the south, while Chiang Mai in the north is the base for exploring the lush mountain areas and hill tribes.

Thailand is a great destination in so many ways. Not only is it perfect for those seeking relaxation and a bit of pampering, but there’s plenty on offer for the more adventurous, intrepid explorer too. You can do as much or as little as you like – be it in a 3 star budget hotel, or a luxury villa – the choice is yours.

  1. Bangkok

Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok, offers a mix of history, outstanding shopping, vibrant nightlife and incredible food. It’s definitely worth a stopover for the Temples and Grand Palace tour alone. However if it’s food your after, the floating markets are must-visit for you. And how could we mention Bangkok without noting the big shopping malls, including MBK, an indoor air-conditioned market place (and yes, the air-conditioning is a well advertised and much needed feature of this shopping mall that you will appreciate).

  1. Phuket

Phuket is the largest island in Southern Thailand and has some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. A testament to the island’s historical soul, Phuket town is known as Phuket Island’s cultural capital. In the heart of Phuket, you’ll also find Patong Beach, famous for its shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Of course, there are a plethora of beaches and beautiful resorts stretching the length of the island too. And, if you’re after something a little quieter, Karon and Kata beach are great, and are located within easy reach of Patong.

  1. Koh Samui

Koh Samui has it all, starting with a beautiful quaint outdoor resort style airport to welcome you. From shops, restaurants and bars, to beautiful beaches and elephants, there’s plenty to keep you busy. A four-hour island tour will show you most of the ley sights and then the island is yours explore! We definitely recommend making time for a (daily) massage either in your hotel or down the street, depending on your budget – Koh Samui does pampering oh so well.

  1. Koh Pha-Ngan

Only a short boat ride from Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan – made famous in 1974’s James Bond’s The Man With The Golden Gun – is an amazing little island recognised as a nature lover’s paradise. Famous for it’s for its Full Moon parties, which attract thousands of party goers, you’ll need to pick your time to either enjoy or avoid this event.

  1. Chiang Mai

If you’re looking to explore the beauty that Northern Thailand has to offer, Chiang Mai is the perfect place to start. Located in the culturally rich crossroads where many traditions collide, the north is home to most of Thailand’s ethnic tribes. Trekking is a particular highlight of this part of the country – and that’s just the beginning. You can try your hand at rafting, zip lining and cycling in the north too. Thanks to the incredible scenery, rushing rivers, forest clad mountains and lush valleys; this is one of the most spectacular regions to explore in South East Asia.

Best time to travel?

November to March.

Your trip to Thailand can be as organised or as paid back as you like. Combining a pre-planned itinerary through the north with a guide, and a beach break with no pre-planned activities is a great combination.
