Travel to Italy

Coliseum at sunset, Rome, Italy

Colosseum, Rome, Italy

Italy is a country full of cultural richness, ancient ruins and the works of famous artists; beautiful landscapes and some of the world’s most picturesque coastlines. Whether you’re seeking fine food and wine and days getting lost in the beauty of the countryside or a little time to sit and ponder the musings of history’s greatest artists, travel to Italy has something for everyone.

Of course, with so many incredible sites and attractions to tick off the list, putting together our favourite features and attractions for you was no easy feat. However, that being said – feel free to feast your eyes over the top six Italian destination picks below!

  1. Rome

Where better to start than the Eternal City? When in Rome, do as the Romans do right? So how about beginning your day with an espresso in Piazza Navona? And then it’s time to grab your map and head out into the city to explore – there’s beauty, monuments, cathedrals and ruins around every corner.

You could visit the Colosseum, admire the architecture of the Pantheon or throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain (over your shoulder with your eyes closed of course – no cheating – that’s half the fun!). Why not venture into Vatican City and get lost in the silence of the Sistine Chapel or St. Peter’s Basilica? That’s just the beginning of things to do in Rome!

  1. Renaissance Florence

Ah Florence – one of Italy’s great cities of art! How better to kick off your stay than by visiting the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo – Florence’s cathedral and the symbol of the city? And why not follow that with a tour of the famous Uffizi Gallery to see precious renaissance art treasures like the statue of David! It’s magnificent! If you’ve got a little time on your hands, venture out and enjoy a day trip to San Gimignano, Siena, Pisa or Lucca to experience Tuscany (the food and wine is worth it!)

  1. Romantic Venice

Perhaps a walking tour of the city to see Piazza and Basilica San Marco takes your fancy? Or maybe it’s a relaxing gondola ride at sunset? A day trip to Venice’s Island is also a must; Murano is famous for glass blowing, Burano with the brightly painted fisherman’s houses and peaceful Torcello – home to Venice’s first cathedral. Or if you’re really adventurous – you might like to go for Carnival!

  1. Milan

Did you know? Milan is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s fresco of The Last Supper. And if it’s culture or art you’re seeking, you could visit the historic centre to see the Milan Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele next door. Not only is Milan considered a global hub of fashion and design, but it’s also known for its high end dining and shopping. Not looking to break the bank? Milan is also filled with boutique and bargain shopping spots!

  1. Tuscany & Umbria countryside

If it’s scenic landscapes, fine wine, mesmerising sunsets and intriguing medieval towns you’re looking for, then you’ll find them here! Travel through the extraordinary countryside of these two regions and stumble upon world famous olive groves and vineyards and picturesque beaches.

  1. Lake Como & the Italian Lakes, Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi coast is a 50km stretch of coastline along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula. Capri, Positano & Sorrento or Cinque Terre, each region has its own warmth and unique characteristics waiting to be explored!

Best time to travel?

April – October. Italy is wonderful! So while you’re taking in the sights and immersing yourself in art and culture, don’t forget to enjoy some of the smaller things too (and yes, we mean the gelato!)
