The west coast of America is a diverse and fascinating place to visit – from Hollywood to the Grand Canyon, San Diego to San Francisco and Los Angeles to Las Vegas, your choice of destinations is entirely up to what you’re after from your trip. Whether you’re travelling with your significant other, a group of friends or your entire family, the west of the US has so much to offer.

Of course, with so much to do and see, you’ll want to ensure you have enough time to tick off all the things on your holiday to-do list. While it’s easy to spend a month in the west alone, if you’re limited to just a number of weeks, you’ll need to decide whether you’re going to pick a couple of places to really explore or you’re going to do the “whistle stop” tour (which might require another holiday once you get a home)!

Before you make your decision, you might like to wander your way through the top 5 destination picks for America’s west coast to help you on your way to discovering your ideal itinerary.

  1. Los Angeles

The west coast is often recognised as the home of Los Angeles, affectionately known as the city of angels. LA is the hub of the film industry and the ideal place to try your hand at some celebrity spotting. You can also shop your way down Rodeo Drive, find your favourite stars along Hollywood Boulevard, or spend a day discovering the wonders of Universal Studios while you’re at it.

Of course, if it’s something a little more relaxing you’d prefer, you might opt for a day of soaking up the oceanfront atmosphere at Santa Monica pier or a casual stroll along the boulevard of Venice Beach. Perhaps you’re ready to indulge your inner child? Then a visit to Disneyland and Disney California Adventurer in Anaheim could be on the cards for you. And if that’s the case, and you’re looking to book your tickets, we suggest you get a Hopper Pass – allowing you to move freely between the parks, so you don’t miss out on any of the fun!

With so much to do and see at the parks, staying in Anaheim or the Disneyland Resort is a great idea – that way you can visit the park over two consecutive days.

  1. Las Vegas

Glittering entertainment, neon lights, city-themed hotels of incredible scale, magic shows, concerts, musicals and casinos galore are all waiting for you in this desert cityscape. Given Las Vegas is a city of size and bright lights like no other, first things first, you might appreciate a wander down the infamous strip.

Be it on foot, in a car or by bus, it’s a great way to get your bearings (while at the same time finding yourself completely lost in the crazy-wonderful beauty of the city). You can join a bright lights city tour, take in a show, relax by your hotel pool, witness the spectacular dancing fountains of Bellagio, visit Graceland Wedding Chapel, sip champagne on a Gondola at the Venetian or indulge in some shopping at the outlet stores. Of course, if you’re a sweet tooth you can stop by M&M World, or for those craving some adventure, you might like to visit the indoor skydiving or the speedway!

With so many activities to indulge in – and contrary to popular belief – it’s incredibly easy to spend time in Vegas without gambling a cent.

  1. San Francisco

San Francisco, or ‘the City by the Bay’, has plenty to offer families, couples and solo travellers alike. While San Francisco is a great town for walking, a cable car ride is a must! You can hire a bike at Pier 41 and take the Bay Trail, across the infamous Golden gate Bridge awaiting your discovery and return by ferry.

If you’re a seafood fan or you’re looking to satisfy your taste buds with a variety of dining experiences available, San Fran’s Fisherman’s Wharf is where you’ll need to go.

  1. National Parks

Las Vegas and San Francisco are the ideal starting points to discover world famous National Parks. From Vegas you can easily get to Hoover Dam, Death Valley, Monument Valley and the geographical wonder of the world, the Grand Canyon.

Of course, if you’re looking for an experience you’ll never forget, you can get a bird’s eye view with a private helicopter flight over the Canyon. South east of San Francisco, and situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite Valley is also well worth a visit. Renowned for its glacier carved waterfalls, deep valleys and ancient giant sequoias, the scenery is spectacular. You can stay right inside the Valley or just outside the entrance! Note: the best time to visit Yosemite Valley is late May/June when the waterfalls are at their best!

  1. San Diego

San Diego is best known for its beaches, parks, warm climate and world famous zoo! Of course, if you’re travelling with the kids, it’s important to note that San Diego is also home to Lego Land and Sea World. Just a two-hour drive from LA and with a pleasant climate year-round, if it’s family-fun or a little relaxation you’re looking for, San Diego could be the destination for you.

Best Time to Travel?

While the west coast is a year-round destination, you’ll find the best weather from June to October. The climate is warm, and Autumn has an average temperature that suits most travellers. When it comes to the west coast, you can hire a car, travel by coach, mix it up with road, rail and air, do it independently or by escorted tour, whichever way you plan to go, we highly recommend it!
